I want to Learn to drive. In the UK which is the best driving school, BSM? RAC? AA?

Best Answer:

I wouldn't go to any of them. I was once told that if a driving instructor was any good then they would do it on their own as their own business as they would make so much more money that way. My friend got rid of BSM after they didn't remember her from one week to the next, they didn't keep track of her progress and sent different instructors every time. Look up Yellow Pages for a local guy - I think that's the best solution.

It doesn't matter about the school - your driving instructor could still suck. I went with AA and the guy that taught me was whack.

RAC is very good.

Go with the ex-cop that was in Little Britain. He's a top teacher. And remember..... Drive it like you stole it.

BSM Ask for an intensive course you could pass in a couple of weeks !

I have no doubt that the large organisations you refer to will have some highly capable and efficient instructors, but it may be better to go with a local driving school - quite often a 'one-man-band' - who may be more flexible and possibly cheaper. Ask around your friends and family to find out if anyone can recommend a driving school of which they have had direct personal experience. As with so many learning situations, it is important to find an instructor with whom you can build an efficient and beneficial relationship, so what was great for one person may not be so good for another.

I learnt to drive a long, long time ago, but what I found was, the most important thing is to have a good rapport with your driving instructor. Personal recommendation is best, so talk to friends who have recently learnt to drive. Good Luck!

I went with BSM for three lessons and i hated the guy and his lesson plan. I would say a private instructor. They seem to be the cheapest and better instructors.

I had lessons with BSM but binned them because I thought my instructor was deliberately taking a long time to teach me all the manoeuvres to make more money. I also wouldn't recommend one of these week long crash courses where you take your test at the end. I know a couple of people who have learnt that way and they are both appallingly bad drivers. Being able to drive well comes through experience and personally I find it frightening that someone can be deemed to have enough experience to be unleashed on public roads after as little as a week behind the wheel. If you don't believe me you really ought to get in the back of our car when my OH is driving. Seriously, I fear for my life (and those of my children, other road users, pedestrians...need I go on)?

BSM and RAC are the same company and i beleive the best. It all depends on your instructor and not the firm, good luck.

Personally I'd go for an independent instructor, rather then pay for a brand name.

Go with the small driving schools, you get the same level of instruction , you just pay more for the big schools. That is if you do get a fully qualified instructor. A lot of the big guys use trainees and charge full price.Check his badge in the window. Should be a green octagon.

I think you'll find that BSM belongs to the RAC

caprilover79 - 2006-08-20 14:02:37
what the first guy said, the thing U need is a good driving instructor, does not matter who they work for. i used an independent one, and i passed in 7 lessons. as long as U feel comfortable with the car, and with the person who is teaching U, that's all U need
